COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL FOR THE STRUGGLE FOR MACEDONIA, ROYAL ISSUE
Circular bronze medal with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with the head of Alexander the Great facing right and inscribed ‘ΜΑΚΕΔΟΝΙΚΟΣ ΑΓΩΝ’ (Macedonian Struggle) and dated ‘1903-1909’; the reverse with a phoenix arising from the flames and inscribed ‘ΒΑΣΙΛΕΙΟΝ ΤΗΣ ΕΛΛΑΔΟΣ’ (Kingdom of Greece) and dated ‘1936’; on replaced but correct ribbon. The medal was created on 15 July 1931 and awarded to survivors then living of the struggle to free Macedonia from Ottoman Turkish rule and who fought against the Bulgarian irregular forces of organisations such as the IMRO vying for control of Macedonia in the years 1903 to 1909. When the monarchy was restored in 1935, the medal was reissued with the words ‘Kingdom of Greece’ rather than ‘Greek Republic’ on the reverse.
